Spanish Partners from CSIC Publish Article on CiROCCO Activities in Almería

Spanish partners from CSIC published an article in Diario de Almería highlighting the installation of European sensors in Almería within the framework of the CiROCCO Project . This initiative aims to study the impact of Saharan dust on the environment and human health, with Almería selected as a strategic pilot site due to its geographical location and frequent exposure to desert dust events.

The article explains that the newly deployed sensors will monitor air quality, particulate matter concentrations, and dust deposition . A key research focus is the role of the soluble fraction of dust particles , which, when interacting with water, may alter the chemical composition of groundwater in arid regions such as Almería. Given the area’s existing water scarcity challenges, understanding these processes is essential for local ecosystems, agriculture, and communities.

Through CiROCCO, these in-situ measurements are combined with satellite observations and advanced modeling techniques to enhance forecasts of dust transport and its impacts. The work in Almería contributes directly to the project’s broader goal of developing innovative, cost-effective monitoring solutions that support environmental management, improve air quality forecasting, and help protect vulnerable regions from the effects of climate change.
