NOA Publishes Article on Improving Desert Dust Forecasts in CiROCCO

Researchers from the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) have published an article titled “Improvement of Desert Dust Forecasts: The Application in the CiROCCO Research Program” on Kosmos magazine. The article focuses on the importance of reliable desert dust forecasting for protecting public health, ecosystems, and societies across affected regions.

The piece highlights the assimilation process developed within CiROCCO, which integrates data from multiple sources—including ground-based sensors, satellite observations, and numerical models—to generate more accurate forecasts of dust transport and deposition. A step-by-step methodology is presented, illustrating how the assimilation system combines real-world measurements with modeling tools to reduce uncertainty and improve prediction performance.

This approach is particularly crucial for undersampled desert environments, where harsh conditions often limit the availability of high-quality in-situ observations. By bridging this gap, CiROCCO enhances the monitoring of dust events and their impacts, from local air quality deterioration to long-range transport across continents.

Through these advances, CiROCCO supports the development of practical downstream services, including air-quality forecasting and dust deposition databases, which provide valuable information for decision-makers, scientists, and communities living under the threat of frequent dust outbreaks.
