ISMC Interview on Spanish Radio Show “A Hombros de Gigantes”
Francisco Javier Alcalá from the Spanish National Research Council, gave an interview on the topic of “Rising Threat of Desert Dust Storms and the CiROCCO Project”.
The interview was hosted on Spanish radio show “A Hombros de Gigantes”, on the 6th of November 2024.
CSIC is the leader of CiROCCO’s Spanish Pilot, and their goal in the project is to enhance GHG modeling, atmospheric dust monitoring, and its impact on natural spaces and groundwater resources
Key Takeaways from the interview:
Dust Storm Frequency: Recent years (2020–2022) have seen record-breaking dust events across Spain, posing significant risks to human health, infrastructure, and biodiversity.
CiROCCO’s Mission: To enhance ground-level dust event monitoring. By deploying innovative sensing technology, CiROCCO is developing tools to predict and manage these events more effectively.
Environmental Impact: Dust from the Sahara has both beneficial and harmful effects. While it can fertilize tropical soils, it raises salinity levels in semi-arid regions like the Iberian Peninsula, affecting soils, ecosystems, and even aquifers. Understanding and managing these impacts is crucial to protect water quality and preserve resources.
Enhanced Data Collection: CiROCCO’s advanced network will facilitate real-time monitoring and forecasting, empowering informed decision-making in urban planning and water management sectors.
