CiROCCO leads the organisation of Townhall TM6 at EGU26, co-organised by the DEAL cluster and sister projects EULIAA, UAWOS, TEMBO-Africa, MISO, and RemoTrees.

The townhall, titled “Exploring remote sensing and in-situ observations in hard-to-reach areas: Challenges and opportunities for understanding climate change impacts”, will take place on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, from 19:00 to 20:00 CEST, in Room 1.31/32 at the Austria Center Vienna, and will be accessible online to all registered EGU26 participants.

Large regions of the world remain systematically under-observed. In deserts, remote forests, wetlands, polar environments, and areas with limited infrastructure, the consistent measurement of atmospheric and climatic variables presents significant scientific, technical, and logistical challenges. These observational gaps directly constrain our ability to detect climate change signals, validate Earth observation products, and support evidence-based climate adaptation strategies.

Drawing on the collective experience of six Horizon Europe projects operating across diverse and demanding environments, Townhall TM6 will foster an open community discussion on shared challenges, emerging solutions, and realistic pathways for scaling in-situ observing approaches. Topics will include autonomous and low-cost sensing technologies, innovative power and communication solutions for remote deployment, and strategies for integrating in-situ measurements with satellite data and modelling frameworks.

The session is open to geoscientists, climate and environmental modellers, data integration specialists, research infrastructure developers, and early-career researchers. Attendees are invited to contribute to the discussion and share their perspectives.

Beers and finger food will be served.
