CiROCCO at the Living Planet Symposium 2025

CiROCCO Project was presented at the Living Planet Symposium 2025, held in Vienna, Austria, from June 23-27, showcasing an innovative approach to monitoring air quality in remote and under sampled desert regions. The project integrates low-cost in-situ sensors, portable monitoring devices, and satellite-based data assimilation to improve the detection and forecasting of desert dust and particulate matter.

The presentation highlighted how this data fusion system enhances atmospheric models, enabling more accurate forecasts and supporting services in public health, renewable energy planning, and environmental research. Pilot implementations in Egypt, Spain, Serbia, and Cyprus demonstrate the solution’s effectiveness and potential for wider application.

CiROCCO represents a significant step towards closing critical data gaps in challenging environments affected by climate change and transboundary dust transport.
